An historical perspective of the climate statistics
for Coventry during November 2017 Temperature We have enjoyed a spell of milder November months than average in recent years, though November 2016 was cooler than average in Coventry (6.0C). For example, two years ago, November 2015 (9.5ºC) was the mildest November in Coventry since 1994, which itself was the warmest November month in Coventry (10.1ºC) since before 1892. So, there has been a recent trend of milder than average Novembers in Coventry, with three of the six warmest November months on record in Coventry in the past eight years (2009, 2011, and 2015). This year however, the mean monthly November temperature (7.1C) has been exactly the same as the 30-year Bablake average temperature for November (1981-2010). Nevertheless, only six November months have been colder than this year in Coventry since the Millennium ( 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2016). Rainfall There has been a 20% increase in November rainfall totals since the Millennium in Coventry, so this year’s relatively low November rainfall total (37.2mm) has bucked the trend somewhat. For the record: 1971-2000 30-year November average rainfall total = 69.7mm 1981-2010 30-year November average rainfall total = 62.6mm 2001 -2016 November average rainfall total = 58.2mm. November 2017 (37.2mm) has been the driest November in Coventry since 2004 (32.6mm). Only 7 November months have been drier than this year in Coventry in the 54 years since 1963 ( 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988, 1990, 1999, 2004). Just out of interest, here is a list of the wettest and driest Novembers in Coventry since 1870: WETTEST DRIEST 154.3mm 1929,1954 3.0mm 1945 152.3mm 1951 14.0mm 1956 150.8mm 1940 15.5mm 1909 137.1mm 1970 16.4mm 1920 136.5mm 1946 17.5mm 1901 Sunshine The first decade of the 21st century recorded 78% more sunshine than a hundred years ago in Coventry, with a record 108.5 hours of sunshine in 2006, for example. So the trend continued in November 2017, with 85.0 hours of sunshine, 28% higher than the 1981-2010 city average. It has been our sunniest November (85.0hr) in Coventry since that record breaking month in 2006. Only five November months have recorded more sunshine that 2017 in the 40 years since 1977 (1985, 1989, 1996, 2005, 2006). Just for comparison, here are the highest and lowest November sunshine totals recorded in Coventry since 1894: SUNNIEST DULLEST 108.5hr 2006 21.8hr 1945 104.7hr 1977 22.7hr 1941 98.6hr 2005 23.2hr 1902 96.1hr 1989 25.0hr 1912 92.2hr 1985 28.1hr 1901 Steve Jackson Bablake Weather Station Coventry UK |
