A glorious day with unbroken, dazzling sunshine from dawn until dusk,
shining through a very deep, blue sky. Down on the beach the visibility was excellent and with no wind and a double-hit sunshine out over the bay, I sat getting some sun on me cold ol' bones in short-sleeves. Mind you, the temperature was a bit on the cold side with a maximum of 8.3C but there was much shelter with the sun-warmed cliffs behind you. Today's sunshine has pushed the monthly total up to 124 hours making this November sunnier than October (118 hours). I bet that doesn't happen that often. -- Nick Gardner Otter Valley, Devon 20 m amsl http://www.ottervalleyweather.me.uk |

October this year had 50.3 hours of sun while, with one day to go, November has already had 53.4 hours. It has happened once before in Tideswell since I have been here. In 2013, October had 45.3 hours while November had 63.0 hours. What is significant here is that the 'home-grown' convective cloud stops around the end of October, so there is more chance of getting a sunny day in November than in October. Not today, mind you. We clocked up only 2.3 hours thanks to the crud coming in from the North Sea. -- Norman Lynagh Tideswell, Derbyshire 303m a.s.l. https://peakdistrictweather.org Twitter: @TideswellWeathr |

Completely sunny days in October in Haytor since 2003 = 15 (average = 1 per year) In November = 25 (average = 1-2 per year) More chance of getting a sunny day in November than October on Dartmoor. Will -- Under a dangler the last 2 days here, so limited sunshine. In fact November is notoriously dull here, with the daytime convection being largely sea based (and at it's strongest with the still 'warm' sea) unlike much of the year. 16.1mm from the dangler in the 48 hours to 09:00 today. It's now moved east of Truro, and is generally more fragmented. Describing yesterday afternoon as 'showers' was pushing it - the rain rarely stopped from 15:00 - 17:00. Graham Penzance |

I bet that doesn't happen that often. 124 hours for November - averaging 4 hours per day - is remarkably good going for what is normally a pretty dull month. If every month managed 124 hours you'd have around 1,500 hours for the year. Though that would probably be a poor return for Devon, by the time you got to inland northern England it might well be a reasonable total. -- John Hall "George the Third Ought never to have occurred. Today's 4 hours of sunshine has brought the monthly total to a healthy 128.1 hours. That is 48% of the total sunshine possible but in context, it is not a high figure and would not be out of place in a spring or summer month. But it is unusual for November. This 'sunny' November has helped the annual sunshine total a little. The yearly total is now at 1666 hours but even with a record-breakingly sunny December, the total is still likely to end up below my eLTA. November's 128 hours of sunshine is nearly spot on my average for October with December, January and February all below (as you would expect). All other months' averages are much higher than this figure. -- Nick Gardner Otter Valley, Devon 20 m amsl http://www.ottervalleyweather.me.uk |

Hi, Nick, Thanks for the reports, November sunnier than October here also (112hr, October just 86hr) However, it is not unusual here and has happened 5 times in the past 12years. When NE Pennine regions are in polar maritime air in winter, especially with west or north west flows, it can be sunny and there is little convection to spoil it. Best wishes Ken Copley Teesdale |

Ken, I've just checked and in the last 12 years of recording sunshine, apart from this year, November has never been sunnier than October. In fact, it has not really ever come close as October is just far too sunny (normally) and it would take a hell of a sunny November to beat it. So this November was rather unusual but also helped by a cloudier than normal October. December has got off to a good start with 7.6 hours of unbroken sunshine all day. -- Nick Gardner Otter Valley, Devon 20 m amsl http://www.ottervalleyweather.me.uk |
