From the Peak District Mountain Weather Forecast for Thursday:
"Cloud may increase at times with fog lowering onto hills above 700 metres, leading to poor navigation conditions." A little way down the same page it is pointed out, quite correctly, that the highest point in the Peak District is 636m a.s.l. Perhaps a cut-and-paste job applied without thought :-( -- Norman Lynagh Tideswell, Derbyshire 303m a.s.l. http://peakdistrictweather.org Twitter: @TideswellWeathr |

Hello Norman,
Your e mail reminds me of a promotion test question that I used to set for new forecasters becoming winter road forecasters. 'What is the height of the highest A roads that cross the Pennines'. Clearly, a crucial part of someone's geographical knowledge if they are assessing snow heights etc., though I was sometimes mocked for asking geographical questions. I won't reveal any answers but suffice to say that good knowledge of met. theory was not always accompanied by a sound geographical general knowledge (it was a multiple choice question so there were some prompts)! The writing was on the wall when they closed all the local weather centres back in the 90s. There will be forecasters writing peak District forecasts who have never been there. No use moaning on here hoping they will see it either, the MetO no longer have a newsgroup feed. It's all ****ter etc nowadays. And ****ter is controlled, articles critical do not get left up.
