Default Pretty wet, pretty windy and pretty cold in some places...

Pretty wet, pretty windy and pretty cold in some places - so says Jay Wynne on the 1.30 pm BBC news.

Oh, and I forgot to say he also said it would be pretty fine this weekend.

It can't be an easy job being a TV weatherman, and I for one couldn't do it! For a start I couldn't guarantee a permanent smile, it would probably come out as some kind of manic grin between a lot of scowling.

To be fair, I paraphrased what Jay Wynne had said, but there were at least 4 maybe even 5 "pretty's" in his 2 minutes.

I just wonder if the BBC presenters ever get together as a group (there must be a collective name for a group of weather presenters, perhaps it's a cloud) and playback forecasts they've presented to each other, and then ask for constructive criticism of the forecast they just watched from other members of the group?

I know that many of the presenters seemed to have been working on emphatic gesturing with their arms (sometimes their entire bodies) trying to out do each other. If you remember, if Michael Fish didn't have to move the magnetic symbols he would have hardly have moved at all, now there's spinning of arms and other gesticulating. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but how much work goes into the words of the forecast or adding any value to that forecast. I know time is very tight, and it might be just one thing that they can add, but without it to me a forecast may as well have been read out by Rita Chakrabarti. Perhaps in the next round of BBC austerity cuts that may well happen.

Bruce.

Couldn't we have Charlotte Green? She reads the footy results on 5 Live and is a wonderful antidote to the snarly herberts you get as commentators.
