Talking of names, Richard, what is your view on storms being named for the benefit of insurance companies inserting disclaimers in policies. It has been mentioned that the Met Office naming system will favour the big insurance companies, at the cost of small policy holders. https://www.erieinsurance.com/blog/2...nce-coverage-2 Named storm (hurricane) deductibles vs. "any other damage" deductibles I believe is fairly standard practice in the US used along coastal areas. I was less aware of this practice in Europe? Richard |

SNIP
a couple of days back we had a named storm, and therefore a weather warning at a time when forecast mean wind speeds (for Penzance) were 20mph (as low as 13mph at one point) and gusts 30mph Tomorrow there are forecast mean wind speeds (and Penzance is sheltered from the north) of up to 30mph with 50mph gusts without a warning. Nothing like inconsistency. I expect tomorrow will see the strongest winds here so far this autumn Graham Penzance Ah, we now having a wind warning for Cornwall (and NW Devon) I think this one might well turn out to be justified. The XCWeather charts (GFS) for noon tomorrow shows the convergence more in that area The sea being so warm (around 2C above normal up wind http://polar.ncep.noaa.gov/sst/rtg_l...maly_oper0.png ) is likely to give it a helping hand. Our 1st sub 10C day since 24th March looks likely tomorrow. Lowest max this year was 5.7C back on 6th Feb. Graham Penzance |

My last 10C day was the 16th March with 8.1C so tomorrow might be below that though given the sunshine it will be close. The lowest maximum this year so far was 5.6C on the 2nd of February. -- Nick Gardner Otter Valley, Devon 20 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk |
