A really interesting article from the BBC:

One wonders why research like this hasn't been done before.

My experience of seeing and hearing about recent scientific research is
that it probably has been done before, perhaps even several times, but
the new kids on the block are completely unaware of it.

In this case, it may be that the Arctic conditions haven't been
suitable until recently. By that, I mean that there hasn't been large
areas of open water every year.
