Default Cold May?

Am I missing something as I keep hearing that it has been a cold May so far.
Normally when this is said it referes to mean temperatures but looking at the CET it is slightly above normal. No I accept that the max temps have been quite low and with mostly low to mid teens which I guess is linked with below normal SST to the NW?

Average temp here in South Hants for May (so far) is 13.2C,
exactly what it was for the whole of May last year.

In St Albans I'm 0.5C above the Rothamsted average (10km to the north and
probably a colder site as its more rural and 30m higher). The below average
temperatures were mentioned on the BBC forecast yesterday evening but there
is no support from my own data.

There have been quite a few clear nights resulting in low overnight minima
but no air frosts; a low of -0.1 on the 25th of march was the last one
here.

This map from Roger Brugge's site shows the temp anomalies across the UK for May up to today.
Below average everywhere except Kent.
So yes, it has been a tad chilly.

I believed it when I went for my paper this morning. Taters!

I don't know about the month being cold so far but I saw yesterday that
the Met Office say it's already wetter than normal.

The low SST to the west, combined with a belt of warmer water from the
US to Spain, would make for a more zonal situation than usual. So, more
west winds than usual blowing over a colder than average sea. So it
should be cool. July 1970 was an extreme example of this sort of SST
anomaly and what it can lead to. In that month, in spite of lower
pressure than usual over the UK, the cold sea also caused it to be dry
as well as cold.

A similar mean temperature anomaly here, -0.5C. If the models are correct for the next week, the mean temperature may well end up near normal all along the south coast. May 2013 was considerably colder, anomaly was -1.6C, the coldest May since 1996.

Rainfall so far 64.4mm (90%)

Except for the dire day of the 14th it has been quite sunny here which
has generally lifted temperatures. My means are closer to those of Kent
so not particularly cold.
