Default Summers in Plymouth over 140 yrs

Summer (June, July, Aug) 2014

Total rain 221.4 mm
1981-2010 average 186.9 mm

Standard deviation 67.8 mm
so not unusual rainfall.

It was the 52nd wettest in the record going back to 1874.
1879 is tops with 438 mm closely followed by 2012 with 433.6 mm.

Summer 2014
Max 20.8 C anom. +1.5C from 1981-2010 average
Min 12.8 C anom. +0.2C
Mean 16.8 C anom. +0.8C

Standard dev. in mean 0.8C

It was the 17th warmest in the 140 year record.
1995 is tops with 17.9C

August 2014 was reported in the media as being the coldest since 1993.
I assume they are referring to an areal average.

It was not especially cold here in SW Devon.
2010 and 2011 were colder.

Are there any places where it was colder than anything since 1993?

Hi, Len,
Copley August 2014 12.9C coolest since 1993 (12.5C)
2011 13.0C so it was a close run thing.
2010 13.3C

Coolest August in recent years was 1986 when my Low Etherley site(155m)
recorded 11.5C, estimated Copley would be 10.6C

It was the coolest August for 7 years here in Wanstead, Len - though I recorded my coldest August night since 1993. I think this is where the media are getting confused

Could be, I recorded the coldest August night in Penzance (since 1991). In fact I can't find a record of a colder August night since at least 1970

Don't forget UK extends a lot further north than uksw posters normally do. As I wrote, coolest in Copley since 1993 and Met O August summary confirms overall UK was coolest since 1993 as well. Perhaps thst is what's confusing the press!

We'll still be here, Will. However, do the Eton Boys know that?
Don't think it'll happen anyway.
It was the coolest August since 1993 though!

My records only go back to 2005 and this August had the coldest mean
temperature with 16.0C.

But the mean temperature hides the fact that the day maximum
temperatures were above normal. It was the cold nights/low minimums
that dragged the mean temperature down.

If you ignored the cold nights then this August actually felt warm and
sunny (as it actually was by day - when I'm out and about). It certainly
much felt better than the cloudy and cool (by day) Augusts of 2010 & 2011.

Overall this has been a fantastic summer (and still is) and I reckon the
best since 2005.
