Default [WR] Romsey - Wednesday 11th December 2013

Fog formed around 2200Z yesterday and to the best of my
knowledge, has persisted ever since. A slight frosty sheen
on some horizontal surfaces but no rime detected. Having
written that, I will report FZFG in the METAR because the
air temperature is below zero Celsius to follow convention
but I will not enter code 49 in the present Synop weather.

As is often the case in these situations, there is a northeast
drift draining off the fields.

Firstly I must apologise for heading my report [WR] instead of [OBS]
and I miskeyed the present weather '46' instead of '47' (now amended),
even though I had written down the correct figure on paper. Somehow
I managed to lose a digit in the transfer to the computer! It's obviously
been too long since my last manual observation on here.

Back to the weather. At 1120Z, the fog rapidly parted in the northeast
quadrant and the visibility shot up to 3000m in that direction. It was a
pity that the wind decided to shift into the west and is bringing the grot
out of the Test Valley back across us while the visibility has closed in to
1300m to the northeast. It's never been better than 400m to the west all
morning.

During the brief clearance, there was a little warmth in the sun despite
the extensive thin cirrus cover and the temp climbed to 3.8C (it has
dropped back 1 degree in the last 10 minutes).

We finally clambered out of fog locally at 1305Z but it's still sitting
there to the northwest, shrouding stretches of the River Test with
only one hour left until sunset.

On a trip to Winchester early this afternoon, the car thermometer
registered +10C in places but we've only just nosed past +7C here
and beside the river it was +4C (at 1345Z). The visibility east and
south of Romsey is in the order of 10 to 15km but only 2800m to
the nearest fog patch, northwest of here.
