uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged. |

With the latest findings to be published into this subject, I thought I'd ask for a consensus to a simple question, DO YOU THINK THE WORLD's CLIMATE IS WARMING UP?
No reference is made to the politics or the causes, beit man made or natural flucuations, as this just muddies the water. Keith (Southend) http://www.southendweather.net "Weather Home & Abroad" |

If we are talking over the past 100 years then an emphatic *yes*, but there has been a most definate 'pause' over the last 15 years. -- Col Bolton, Lancashire 160m asl Snow videos: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3QvmL4UWBmHFMKWiwYm_gg |

Keith (Southend) http://www.southendweather.net "Weather Home & Abroad" Nice try Keith, but you won't be able to escape the few denialists who will point to a datum of 1998 (the super El Nino year) to try to say it isn't, even though the last decade was significantly warmer than any before and the warmest two years in the last 150 have occurred since 1998. It is clearly warming. Everyone with any influence in science thinks so and the data show it is and IPCC AR5, published this week, will show it is. Global temperatures are currently close to record levels despite ENSO neutral conditions and no sign of an El Nino for almost 3 years. Global ocean temperatures are at record levels despite those ENSO neutral conditions. Climate scientists say the world is warming, because it is. |

Keith (Southend) http://www.southendweather.net "Weather Home & Abroad" The data that scientists consider is too miniscule to worry about - the world sorts itself out and rebalances via farting volcanoes and such like. And when climate has changed over thousands man has always had the fortitude to adapt. That river keeps bursting its banks - move. That icesheet is moving south - move. WE ADAPT AND MOVE if the climate doesnt suit us. Always have done. So instead of wasting resources on telling us what they think is going to happen over the next hundred years perhaps they should put their efforts into solving world hunger and disease. Big Jim |

Keith (Southend) http://www.southendweather.net "Weather Home & Abroad" I'll risk further abuse and say : I think we all agree the planet has warmed since coming out of the little ice age and that warming picked up again after the cooling of the sixties and yes Co2 may have played some part but how much and then at what cost to foolishly believe that the human hand is the only tweaker of the earths heat balance. It also irrefutable that satellite data has shown the warm has come to an abrupt stop almost level for the past 18years. We also know that although co2 has risen that the temperature has literally stopped following which begs the question has temperature ever followed. Antarctic ice is at all time high level since satellites began measuring it . None of the so called disaster scenarios have followed the said AGW theories. Therefore it all rather interesting really, who knows where it will all end? |

Last 12 months were the 7th warmest Sep-Aug periods. Temperature was 0.59C above 1901-2000 average. 11-yr mean centred on 2007 was 0.15C higher than that on 1998. Taking a shorter averaging period, 3 yrs, the last highest value was 2006 (0.62), before that was 1998 (0.49), 1990 (0.34), 1982 (0.21), 1973 (0.04). Any bets on 2013-15 continuing the recent 8-yr cycle? A decent El Nino next year would do the trick. ;-) -- Graham P Davis, Bracknell, Berks. Which doesn't necessarily mean that 2013 will be warmer than 2012 (especially if you consider a particular region rather than the globe as a whole). But when you consider timescales of decades and longer then I'm sure the world is warming. There was a very good article by Geoffrey Lean about the Arctic ice in the Telegraph back on the 14th of this month. Unlike many Greens he doesn't over-egg the pudding, but writes in what seems to me a pretty balanced and well-informed fashion. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/env...ht-of-day.html Sadly the web version seems to omit the graph that is referred to in the text and which was included in my newspaper. -- John Hall "Distrust any enterprise that requires new clothes." But at least he mentioned that the whole of the depth of the ocean had been plumbed to compare previous deep ocean temperatures with the present catastrophic ones. Did he happen to mention how they managed to do it? Or even better, prove that the new conditions are purely heat related and not misinterpretations of specific heat at different concentrations of solute levels? Goes without saying I know. After all, if I could think of it a respected newspaper would take pains to gather the complete facts for the rest of us. |

Keith (Southend) http://www.southendweather.net "Weather Home & Abroad" Looking out of my window, I do not see any signs of warming. In fact it seems to be cooling as winter approaches! For what is happening to the World's climate I have to rely on people better qualified than me who study such matters and compile the records. I gather that they are saying that the World's climate has warmed over the last 150 years but not over the last 15. Does that answer your question? What do you think? Cheers, Alastair. |

Without a doubt - as evidenced by ocean heat content data, sea level rise, the collapse of Antarctic ice shelves, melting of mountain glaciers, decline of the Arctic sea ice, and at the last count about 20,000 other physical and biological metrics consistent with a warming world (according to IPCC 2007). All the evidence indicates that the climate system continues to accumulate heat unabated. |
