Default (off topic) News Reader question

Hi

I personally use Google Groups to view the uk.sci.weather newsgroup with but I fancied a change, but don't seem to be able to find MS Outlook anymore on my Windows 7 PC, so I just wondered if anyone could recommend a good (hopefully free) news reader?

Bruce.

Yes there's life in the old dog yet!

I've found Windows Live Mail and plugged in the NTTP server to
news.btinternet.com - I'd forgot I use BT as an ISP believe it or not!

It doesn't look too bad.

Windows Live Mail does not quote properly. By that I mean it doesn't insert
a '' at the beginning of each line in posts to which you are replying so
that your readers cannot distinguish where the quoted message ends and your
reply begins.
To help, some users of WLM insert a line of breaks '=====' below the quoted
message and above their reply.

Whatever you do, please don't use MS mail products. Postings from Google
Groups cause enough trouble and MS only adds to it. [Poor or
non-existent quoting, non-removal of sigs, excessive numbers of blank
lines in quoted messages.]

I've used a couple of products on Linux that are also available for
free on Windows.

(1) Thunderbird is pretty good is you want something that will deal with
mail and RSS as well as news. If you want a calendar included as well,
there is the Lightning plug-in. The latter is the best calendar I've
come across and I still use it although I no longer use TB for mail and
news.

(2) Pan is a simple newsreader that does nothing else so, if you need
mail, this isn't for you. As a newsreader, it's a treat to use. It also
prompts you to use good netiquette by prompting you when you've
included too much quoted material, for instance.

In article ,
oard says...
www.forteinc.com "Agent" newsreader. Try one of the older ones first
as they tend to be less complex.

Yes. I could recommend that too. Microplanet Gravity is also an option,
I use it, but Agent is probably the better package.
