Default Flatfile of data on Observing Stations (03 December 2012 edition)

Does anyone know why this is password protected now, I wanted to get an to date file as checking through some of the synop station numbers my old version doesn't list them and this is just for Norway.

Hi Keith,

Are you familiar with this site?:

http://gis.ncdc.noaa.gov/map/viewer/#app=cdo

It has details of a huge number of observing sites. Not sure if it is every one
but it is certainly most of them. A big advantage is that the interface is
graphical so you can see where the sites are on a map. Gardermoen, for example,
is quite a way inland from Oslo, to the NE.

When you get onto the site

a) click in the "All Maps" tab.
b) Then click on the "Global Hourly Surface Data" button. That will produce
a world map showing all of the observing stations.
c) Click on the '+' magnifier below the 'hand'on the left of the screen.
d) Click and drag a rectangle over the area of interest to zoom in. You can
do this as often as you like enabling you to zoom right down to street
level. (Alternatively you can use the magnifying slider on the left
to zoom in and out and select the 'hand' to move the map.
e) Once you have got down to the appropriate level of zoom click
on the 'i' button on the 'Tools' bar at the top left. The cursor will
then become a '+'. Clicking this on any of the observing station dots
will bring up full details of that site. Note that sites that are no
longer operational are included so for real tim use make sure that
the 'End Date' is within the past few days.

This all sounds more complicated than it really is. After a couple of minutes
of experimentation you should be well away.
