What is responsible for the sudden development of the very dramatic
line of extremely heavy showers across the Midlands in the last hour?

It looks very naughty; I wish I was there.

And another convergence line SW-NE from Dorset to Berkshire to London.
Most interesting.
These are meso scale features embedded in the multi frontal (surface
and upper) nature of the current depression.

Hi Trevor.
Heavy showers in Marlow(Bucks) this evening,worst rainfall rate 25.6mm an hour !
Rain stopped at 1807Z, rain total since 09Z=13.00mm

It looks very naughty; I wish I was there.

It was more than a little mischievous, I got caught in it on the A46 between Coventry and Kenilworth. Stopped the traffic in the northbound lane because of flooding. Looks like another one popping upstairs the moment.
