It looks like the Westerlies are returning this week, with a flatter
Jet Steam heading to the South of the UK http://www.wetterzentrale.de/topkarten/fsavneur.html |

Low pressure and northerly, northerly, northerly from around day 10 onwards. A case of "if only it were January" perhaps? :-) Only consolation is it is so far ahead as to be near-zero probability of happening. |

To be honest I think I'd prefer northerlies to SWlies, though the local effects of this part of southern England do influence things, and other parts of the country may be different (SWlies are much more pleasant in the rain-shadow of the Welsh mountains, IMX, for instance). Nlies may be cool but at least they generally produce good visibility, relatively little rain and often, very light winds. SWlies on the other hand tend to produce the most unpleasant weather at this (and indeed most other) time of year down here. I think I'd prefer 3C below average and dry to 1C below average and sopping wet right now! Nick |

Yes, you're spot on there, Nick. In this area, SW'lies are something to look forward to. A typical warm sector is usually dry and mild/warm, with excellent visibility - and usually some warm sunshine if the depth of moisture isn't too great. A far cry from what I grew up experiencing down in Somerset! -- Freddie Bayston Hill Shropshire 102m AMSL http://www.hosiene.co.uk/weather/cumulus/ https://twitter.com/#!/BaystonHillWx for hourly reports |
