Just been looking at the town of Orange in southern France on XC Weather
where they are reporting a temp of minus 4C dewpoint minus 15c and a wind
gust of 60 mph ! That should dry the washing nicely....

It would freeze it solid Ron! I remember my mum bringing in washing
from the line that she'd tried to dry on sunny and breezy ice days in
Yorkshire and her then having to lean the jumpers up against the
fireguard to thaw them out!

I would hate to live in the Rhone valley in winter.

I can remember something similar even down here in Surrey.

I suppose that on average they will only have one or two days like that
a year, but they must be very unpleasant when they occur.

It really was funny seeing my jumpers standing upright!

The mistral blows for longer than that John and the residents and
farmers of the Rhone valley learned a long time ago to protect against
it in all sorts of ways. It's an occurrence whose influence you can
see all over the landscape and it can be a pig of a wind. I've never
fancied the area as a place to live because of it.

A friend of mine who lives close to there says it has been -11C since
Friday. He does get very nice summers to compensate, though...

True; the mistral cools in the summer! A time to visit, or live, by
far.

Yes, I hung the washing out the other night with temperatures and DPs
below freezing. As I was hanging the washing it was freezing and going
rigid, but by morning it was all dry and no ice, ready to bring in -
perfect!

As long as the temperature remains above the DP, even though sub-zero
the washing freezes but the ice then sublimes (ice goes straight to
vapour without entering the liquid phase) leaving the washing dry.

In fact, down 'ere with its inherent 'dampness' in the climate, this can
be the only the way to get the washing dry sometimes in the winter time.
