I remember my mum bringing in washing from the line that she'd tried to dry on sunny and breezy ice days in Yorkshire and her then having to lean the jumpers up against the fireguard to thaw them out! I would hate to live in the Rhone valley in winter. |

I can remember something similar even down here in Surrey. I would hate to live in the Rhone valley in winter. I suppose that on average they will only have one or two days like that a year, but they must be very unpleasant when they occur. -- John Hall "The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it." The mistral blows for longer than that John and the residents and farmers of the Rhone valley learned a long time ago to protect against it in all sorts of ways. It's an occurrence whose influence you can see all over the landscape and it can be a pig of a wind. I've never fancied the area as a place to live because of it. http://www.jstor.org/pss/214733 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mistral_(wind) |

He does get very nice summers to compensate, though... |

As I was hanging the washing it was freezing and going rigid, but by morning it was all dry and no ice, ready to bring in - perfect! As long as the temperature remains above the DP, even though sub-zero the washing freezes but the ice then sublimes (ice goes straight to vapour without entering the liquid phase) leaving the washing dry. In fact, down 'ere with its inherent 'dampness' in the climate, this can be the only the way to get the washing dry sometimes in the winter time. -- ____________________________ Nick G Otter Valley, Devon 20 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk |
