Unusual to see Madrid cooler - and by quite a long way - than the
Mediterranean coast, where the city's inhabitants migrate en masse in August
to escape the stifling heat of the capital.
(Remember the 39C last weekend during the Pope's visit.)

The culprit was the depression crossing the British Isles, or at least its
long trailing cold front which crossed Spain from NW to SE during Friday.
Madrid was in the colder air for all of daylight hours, but ahead of the
front, westerly winds brought hot air off the meseta onto the coast,
replacing the prevalent on-shore wind and significantly raising the
temperature at places such as Alicante.

Look for a reversal of this effect in today's figures, with Madrid
recovering and Alicante cooler than normal.
