From 1.7.11. I have become totally 'Standardised' with a Stevenson
screen (with min, max, wet and dry thermoms) to finally complement all my other manual/standard instruments. However, I also have a Davis Vpro2 AWS from which I have approx' 4yrs worth of data and from which I have created average temps, etc, using those figures - WHAT TO DO NOW? I will obviously use the Standard (screen) figures for my monthly averages from now on - but can, should I: 1.) Start afresh with a whole new set of 'Standard' averages (and effectively forget about the 4yrs worth of AWS data) and/or have two sets of averages, one Standard and one AWS, or 2.) Just keep going - but now with a mix of 4yrs AWS and now Standard from here on in. I have had a Snowdon rain gauge since 1.8.10. and have just kept going with the averages. (No.2) Opinions and or knowledge of what is best practice much appreciated |

You should run a series of comparison daily readings for as long as
possible, which will enable you to correct the 4 years of Davis readings to be equivalent to your new Stevenson Screen values. You shouldn't need to attempt to correct individual daily max/mins, but just the monthly/annual mean values for each month. Provided that there is no problem with the exposure or stability of your instruments, you should get consistent stable difference in the monthly mean values over a number of years. -- Bernard Burton Wokingham Berkshire.
