I have been away for the last six days and last Saturday, went for a
walk on the Pennine Way in conditions resembling late July instead of April; warm, slightly humid and very hazy. When I got onto the Pennine plateau approaching Black Hill summit, I thought I heard a rumble of thunder. Looking east, I saw a cluster of huge developing thunderstorms a few miles away, it wasn't just one storm, there were at least three distinct updraughts (cores) that I could make out. I was concerned at first that I would get caught in an electrical storm right on a high level plateau where I would be the only thing sticking up for miles around, but thankfully, the wind was blowing from the SW and the storms moved roughly due north so didn't come any closer. It was an impressive sight and I wished I had my camera with me. Does anyone here live in the region between Sheffield and Huddersfield that copped these storms and could say how severe they were? |
