Default Today's model interpretation (12/09/03)

Here is a summary of the latest NWP output, for noon (GMT) on Tuesday.
Issued 0547z, 12/09/03.

ECMWF: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Recm1201.gif
The UK lies under SW'lies and WSW'lies, with low pressure to the SW of
Iceland and high pressure over eastern Europe. High pressure also covers
much of Iberia and France, as is the case at T+144 when light to moderate
westerlies and SW'lies cover the UK. A ridge moves over England and Wales at
T+168, with light southerlies there and moderate south or SW'lies elsewhere.

MetO: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rukm1201.html
Unavailable at time of issue.

GFS: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rtavn1081.gif
A deep low lies to the SW of Iceland, while high pressure covers central,
southern and eastern Europe. The UK lies under SW'lies, moderate over
Scotland and Northern Ireland but light over southern England. The winds
become slightly stronger over Scotland at T+120, with 850hPa temperatures
ranging from +7C over NW Scotland to +14C over SW England. The SW'lies
increase in strength across England and Wales at T+144, with moderate winds
across all of the UK. A trough moves over northern Scotland at T+168 as the
low moves NE'wards, leaving the UK under moderate westerlies. Southerlies
and SSW'lies cover the UK on day 8 as a small ridge moves eastwards,
followed by stronger southerlies and SSW'lies from a low to the west of
Scotland on day 9. Day 10 sees a cointinuation of southerlies and SW'lies
for most, although winds fall light over Northern Ireland due to a trough
from the low.

GEM: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rgem1081.gif
SW'lies cover the UK, due to a deep low to the SW of Iceland. The SW'lies
continue at T+120, with 850hPa temperatures ranging from +7C over NW
Scotland to +14C over Cornwall and Devon. There's little change at T+144,
with SW'lies persisting over the UK.

JMA: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rjma1201.html
The Japanese run a westerly flow over the UK, with an Icelandic low and a
trough over Biscay. 850hPa temperatures vary from +5C over the Western Isles
to +14C across SE England.

Model overlay charts (GEM/GFS/JMA):
http://expert.weatheronline.co.uk/da.../ens/pslv.html
Unavailable at time of issue.

In summary, the runs today show an Icelandic Low bringing a SW'ly spell of
weather for the middle of next week, although there are differences between
the runs, as usual (ECM goes for southerlies and settled for England and
Wales at T+168, whereas the GFS shows westerlies for all). As ever, more
runs are needed.

One of my pet peeves about the weather is when it gets stuck into a rut
for a week or more.
