This is a weather post, but it will hopefully illustrate the daftness
of highlighting temporary upward blips in ice cover through the freezing and the melting seasons. The ice is now melting quickly, though the melt season started almost a month late. Despite colder than average conditions in a few areas during March, taking the Arctic as a whole, it was warmer than average through the winter and has continued that way into spring. All present signs show a fast melt to come, the number of polynas in areas which will melt during May is greater than average, auguring quicker than average melt and winds have blown a lot of older ice southwards along the Greenland coast and this will melt more than if it had stayed further north. http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/index.html |
