I had to laugh because we all watched 2012 on DVD Sunday night, could
this be the start. "The end is nigh"

Keith that doomsday prediction stuff is all based on the fact that the Mayan
calendar ends in 2012, however the truth is that they just couldn't afford
to pay the printers for 2013 one.

It doesn't seem unreasonable to me that if the weight of ice
above a volcano is reduced then that volcano could erupt
under those conditions.
And note that that they not claiming that that the current
eruption in Iceland has anything to do with global warming.

It's a hack in the Telegraph (no offence Philip). The volcano is in
the news and we've got an ash cloud grounding flights across Europe.
Does that give you a clue why the hack has interviewed the scientists
who produced research 2 years ago? It's older research, but the
conclusions are quite possible. I don't think tectonics is one of your
strong points Lawrence, but following denialist comments is. This was
from Brahic and Sigmundsson's original paper from 2008:

http://www.newscientist.com/article/...eruptions.html

Do some reading before trying to add to the denialist trash heap. It
has nothing, as the authors clearly say, to do with GW. You've linked
it because some idiot blog, or newspaper hack has implied it does.

Oh, perhaps you could. In Kim Stanley Robinson's book Green Mars,
published in 1992, volcanic activity dislodges the West Antarctic Ice
Sheet, causing a sudden rise in sea level.

Yes there's a case of Volcanic activity causing rising sea levels at least,
will Dawlish be at risk?

I don't know how high Dawlish is but the collapse of the sheet doesn't
happen until 2127 so no need to panic. ;-)
