John you're right, I'm having a cut 'n' paste meltdown. The mean temp should be 3.3°C. Cheers Nick. ____________________ Nick Otter Valley, Devon 83 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk |

For some reason that didn't cut 'n' paste very well, here's (hopefully) a
better, clearer version, though it looked OK before I posted it: Summary for Winter 2010 Mean Max: 6.2°C Mean Min: 0.4°C Mean: 5.9°C High Max: 12.1°C 9th Dec Low Min: -10.7°C 7th Jan Mean Grass Min: -2.9°C Grass Min: -15.8°C 7th Jan Rain Total (gauge): 281.1 mm Rain Days 0.2: 50 Days Rain Days 1.0: 37 Days Max 24 hrs: 38.9 mm 16th Jan Days without any rain: 40 Days Air Frost: 34 Days Ground Frost: 66 Days Snow Falling: 2 Days Snow (50%) @ 9am: 6 Days Thunder Heard: 0 Days Hail 5 mm: 1 Day 9th Feb Hail 5 mm: 0 Days Fog @ 9am: 1 Day 18th Jan Total Monthly Sunshine: 254.2 Hours Most Sunshine in a Day: 08:45 Hours Average Daily Sunshine: 02:49 Hours Sunless Days: 16 Days Cloudless Days: 13 Days Total Possible Sunshine: 795:38 h:m Percentage of Total Sun: 32 % Mean Soil Temp @ 30 cm: 3.7°C Mean Soil Temp @ 100 cm: 6.0°C Wind 39 mph: 0.00 Days N: 19.55 Days NE: 12.59 Days E: 8.69 Days SE: 9.18 Days S: 5.88 Days SW: 6.58 Days W: 11.39 Days NW: 6.44 Days Calm: 9.71 Days Mean Wind: 3.3 mph Max Gust: 37 mph 16th Jan Mean Cloud Cover: 56% Mean RH @ 9am: 84% Rain Duration 0.1mm/hour: 156.8 Hours Frost Duration: 443.0 Hours Max Frost Duration in a Day: 24.0 Hours 7th Jan Percentage of time with Air Frost: 21% Mean Pressu 1008.4 hPa Max Pressu 1041.6 hPa 26th Jan Min Pressu 980.3 hPa 25th Feb Max Dewpoint: 10.7°C 9th Dec Min Dewpoint: -13.0°C 7th Jan Mean Dewpoint: 0.6°C Max Humidity: 100% 9th Dec Min Humidity: 56% 11th Feb Mean Humidity: 85% _______________________ Nick Otter Valley, Devon 83 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk |

Is the mean not meant to be 3.3ºC? Yep, cheers Alex for noticing. For some reason Excel changed the column for averaging from E to D. Therefore it gave the average of the range of temperature instead. I have had this happen before with Excel when it changes the range/rows/columns. I checked with my winter Excel template and it definitely averages the 'E' column, so how that suddenly changed itself is really strange. I looked through the data a couple of times before posting but I kept missing this obvious error! _____________________ Nick Otter Valley, Devon 83 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk |

Only 2 days snow falling?
Absolutely incredible for a cold winter!!! Aye. I mean, snow could of fell during the night or when I was not at home, but if it did, it didn't leave any evidence, i.e., it melted. I make my observations at 9am every day. Just looking back over the last few winters, it seems snow is a rare thing here, it nearly always falls as damn cold rain. I think we had 4 days with snow falling; 2 of those were short showers that left no cover, one fall left a sprinkling and we had one proper fall of about 2" - the night of the infamous Haldon Hill debacle! That hung around for a few days. Enough for a gentle soul like me! |

Will -- 8 days even in Penzance (and a 6 days with a snow cover at 09:00) There were 3 days with quite heavy snow falling. That, the large amount of sunshine, and the fact that there were no gales (except 1 right on the sea front) being the most exceptional features of the winter here. There were no very low temperatures (minimum 4.1C) Graham Penzance |
