![]() "Yannis" schreef in bericht ... A sudden drop in temperature is forecast to give an end to the last days' heat, as forecasting models have been suggesting for close to a week. The greatest drop is expected on Thursday, when I am expecting some snow flurries over higher grounds of central continental Greece (1700m). The fresh spell should not last long, but it would be more than welcome. Yannis, SE Athens getting cloudy Hey, Yannis Forgive my ignorance, but it mustn't be very usual to have snow in Central Greece so early in the season? Just checked the atlas; Central Greece is about a latitude of 40 N! Well, influences of the continent must be big; but though. In a very phlegmatic way you tell us about snow on the third of September! While, at the other hand, a forecast of snow in November (!!) over Britain brings such a fuss in this very newsgroup. But that doesn't sound very rare to me, despite the maritime climate. Hope you'll see some snow over Central Greece in the days to come -- and: winter's on again, so let there be lots of snow for you; and lots of ice for us :-))). Wijke SE Flevopolder The Netherlands |

| Hey, Yannis
| Forgive my ignorance, but it mustn't be very usual to have snow in Central | Greece so early in the season? Just checked the atlas; Central | Greece is about a latitude of 40 N! Well, influences of the continent | must be big; but though. In a very phlegmatic way you tell us about snow on | the third of September! Hello Wijke, it is indeed quite early in the season for the central highlands of Greece to receive snow. The first snow on the northern greek highlands arrives during the second or last third of September ; it usually takes a further fortnight for snow to reach the central highlands (for the first time in the season). If any significant precipitation was forecast for the north of the country tomorrow, I would be quite sure it would snow at altitudes above ~5600 ft there. However, the areas where precipitation is expected tomorrow are in the centre and the south of Greece and I'm thus expecting some snow flurries only in the wind prone mountain ranges of ie Mt.Parnassos (peak at 8125 ft) etc. The influence of the continent is interestingly high only over northern, central and parts of eastern continental Greece (semi-continental to continental climate) -definitely not the west (much more of a portuguese-like climate). | While, at the other hand, a forecast of snow in November (!!) over Britain | brings such a fuss in this very newsgroup. But that doesn't sound very | rare to me, despite the maritime climate. It would be a fuss in Greece, too, if snowfalls were expected at low level (1200-1500 ft) areas of the central regions in November, as it hardly ever is the case. But I was only talking about the highlands, not the lowlands. Yannis, SE Athens +23.0C, RH 62% |

But I was only talking about the highlands, not the lowlands. Well, thàt must be due to the latitude of Central Greece, Yannis. In Holland November-snowcover is not rare despite our maritime climate. ( Btw. with a range from ms 6.2 m to + 322,4 m we can hardly speak of high- and lowlands. Everything is as "high" in the Netherlands :-) ). The earliest snowdate ever in the centre of the country was October 13 1975. A cover of 5 cm lying snow almost whole day. Unfortunately the temperature rose in the evening so the snow melted and was gone by midnight. Another event, I can remember well, is November 19 and 20 1985. Early frost - and snowdays. With dinural ranges of ms 4.9 to ms 2.1 C Nov. 19 :-) and ms 5.1 - ms. 1.5 C Nov 20. It was a frosty period with regular snowfall in the north of the conntry (Groningen); Nov 30 was the next frost-day. And a snowcover of 13 cm. A lovely winter followed ( particularly February) This is to such a winter :-)), Wijke |
