Default [WR] Copley August 2003

August 2003 in Copley was warm, dry and sunny with 16 days above 20C

Here are the figures (averages are for 1971-2000)

Temperature C
Mean max 20.2(+1.2)High 28.4 on 9th Low 12.7 on 28th
Mean min 10.6(+1.0)Low 5.6 on 28th High 16.7 on 10th
Mean 15.4(+1.1) Mean AWS 14.9 (+0.6)
Mean grass min 6.9(-0.6)Low 0.1 on 31st

Rain mm
Total 10.3(17%) AWS 12.9
Rain days 6, Wet days 2, Max 24hr 5.1 on 28th
Thunder days 2

Sunshine hr
Total 184.6 (117%) High 13.9 on 9th
Days no sun 1

Wind kn
Mean SW 5.5, max gust 35 on 21st

Mean barometer 1018.8 mb

A good month, imho, often warm, but not excessively so. Very dry and
sunny which is good for a rain hater and sun lover such as I.

The 28.4C max was a Copley record for any month and the 10.3mm rain was
the lowest for any month. Records began 12/95.

For us in the south, Ken, your figures are from a different

world, with
your 28.4°C being the highest in 8 yrs. But it is not so much the

absolute
values but the differences from the mean that are interesting. The

anomaly of
max temp here was +4.1°C (25.7 compared with a 1971-2000 mean of

21.6). It
will be very interesting to see a map of August (or summer as a whole)
temperature anomalies for Europe. I suspect that the greatest anomaly

will be
over France and Italy.

Hi, Tudor,

It certainly is different - I read with amazement the posts referring
to installing air conditioning!

Provisional figures from our NE England group so far seem to indicate
mean max between +1.2C and + 2.5C with mean min from +0.1C to + 1.5C.
These give means of + 0.9C to +1.5C.

I suspect continental influence to be the key factor. There is also our
friend the North Sea which tends to cool things down for us.

There was also a significant rainfall event at Carlton in Cleveland,
near Stokesley, North Yorkshire on 10th which received little national
attention. Perhaps it will come to light when the Met O receive Mike
Cinderey's data from there. During the storm, 45.3mm fell in 10min (c
270mm/hr rate!). If, after the expert analysis of the charts takes
place, this is ratified, it could be one of the most intense downpours
ever recorded in the British Isles. 47.2mm fell in 12 mins and 51.8mm
fell from the whole storm.

This rivals the Wisbech downpour of 27 June 1970, the widely accepted
most intense downpour, when 50.8mm fell in 12 min.

As you say, though, Tudor - a different world, so not much mentioned
about it so far.

ATB,

as someone who caught the edge of the rain on the 10th (went as far south as
the Peak District) I agree with the comments of a different world.
Does anyone have any reputable maximum temperature figures for south Cumbria
during August, because while I was away on holiday during the hot spell,
during the week ending the 10th, temperatures do not seem to have been
within 5 degrees C of those quoted for further south.

Jim, highest readings I have include:
Shap 27.8
Walney I 29.4
Keswick 29.6
Aspatria 30.6
Morecambe 31.0
St Bee's Hd 32.7

This latter figure is not far short of the county record which I believe
stands at 33.3 recorded at Newton Rigg, nr Penrith, in July 1901.

thanks for that Philip, looks like we didn't hit 30 here, especially with
the chance of a sea breeze.

still, it was hot enough

A +30.0C (+3.4) average temperature for downtown Athens (NOA station at
Thission) -I couldn't believe it when I heard it! I'm sure places in
Switzerland, Italy and France must have been even higher up compared to
their August averages.

I keep a check on the figures for Limoges, central France, as it's the
closest
long-standing station to my AWS out there. It's at the city's airport, on an
open plateau 282m AMSL:

June Mean Max 26.2 (+4.4) Mean Min 16.5 (+4.6)
July Mean Max 24.9 (+0.6) Mean Min 15.3 (+1.7)
August Mean Max 29.9 (+6.6) Mean Min 18.6 (+5.2)

Summer Mean Max 27.0 (+3.9) Mean Min 16.8 (+3.8)
According to local news reports it exceeded the previous record-holder,
1947, by almost a degree.

Also:
Summer rainfall 221mm (110%) Sunshine 807h (118%)

Philip

At least I now know my temp of 31.6c for Brampton, NE Cumbria on the 9th is
now not a new Cumbria record.

Myself and others around North Cumbria had been struggling to find any data
prior to 1970 (ish), best we thought was around the 30c mark for Carlisle

Oh well there is always next year

Philip,
The anomalies for August are extraordinary, and those for June are fairly
tasty as well. But a few simple subtractions gives August mean max and min as
23.3°C and 13.4°C respectively. These seem rather low for central France, even
for a station at 282m, especially as if the plateau is of any size this would
tend to partially neutralise the altitude effect. Are the figures correct? I
hate to doubt you, but my credulity is stretched. :-)
