Just comparing this year to last - I have 40 acres of daffodils
surrounding my house. 2008, first daffodils were through on 11th Jan, first in flower on 21st Jan, commercial picking started 29th Feb. 2009, first daffodils through on 27th Jan, very little further growth since then - no sign of anything near flowering yet. At last, proper winter weather seems to be putting things back on track Paul |

One morning last week we had 0.5cm first thing in the morning, gone by 10 am. In the village of Wrea Green there are daffodils in full bloom. It seems that the Fylde area really does enjoy a micro climate of its own, sheltered from the east by the Pennines, from the South by the Welsh mountains and from the North by the Lake district mountains. The only way we get any snow is if it comes in from the West. The only thing that usually comes in from the West is wind and rain - lots of it, especially in "summer". Here at the moment its cold and cloudy but dry. Roy |

It must have been a pretty unpleasant job recently. The cold weather has obviously slowed them down, which means a long season, which should please the growers. If it's very mild they open so quickly a lot get wasted. Graham Penzance |

There hasn't been a decent polar low in NW England for over 10 years now though. There is some snow coming in from the west tomorrow though, though I guess on the very low ground it will just be rain. -- Col Bolton, Lancashire 160m asl |
