Default Low coming towards Biscay

1920 23/1/09

Is it my imagination or is the deep low predicted to track across Biscay a
little further north than expected judging by the satellite imagery? Already
we seem to have frontal precipitation showing up on the radar west of
Cornwall. If so there could be some unexpected snow on the way for SW
England?

Current temperature 1.6C falling
Bar 984.5 hPa falling

Wind's now in the east in Penzance (as it is at Culdrose & Scilly).
The Met Office forecast for Penzance at 21:00 is WNW at 15mph, which
is now clearly going to be wrong. It does seem to be further north
than expected.

Its pretty easy to identify on the infra sat for 1945 hours:

Not sure about the projections but it doesn't look far off the GFS 12Z
prediction, maybe a tade bit north?

Whatever its track it will certainly wake Northern Spain from their
slumber overnight. See Bilbao's TAF below:

Also, when was the last time SW France saw pressure levels this low?

It doesn't seem to be moving much now. Chances of Dartmoor getting a
white out decreasing maybe?

Météo France has issued a red alert for 5 departments in SW France -
Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Haute-Garonne, Gers, Hautes-Pyrénées, Landes -
warning of severe gales http://france.meteofrance.com/vigilance/Accueil .

This is only the 7th time a red alert has been issued since the system was
set up following the December 1999 storm.

Météo France say the present storm may be of comparable severity to the
December 1999 storm but will affect a smaller area. Later tonight and
tomorrow morning gusts of 130 km/hr may be expected inland and 150 km/hr on
the coast; 20 to 40 mm rain is likely and waves on the coast may reach 6 to
8 metres in height.

Thanks Colin.

Notice the temperature fluctuations at Bilbao with the change in wind
direction.
