Default Wot! No Snow!?

" Far southeast England may see some bright spells, otherwise England
and Wales will be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of light rain around,
especially this morning. Scotland and N.Ireland should be fine generally
with some warm sunny spells. Light winds. "

I'm a few miles north of Portsmouth and it's been snowing steadily here for the last 2 hours.
It started to lay at first (my car was covered) but then it got a bit wetter, but still large flakes
coming down. Very pretty.

Lovely and sunny here :-)

Coldest night of the month (and only the second air frost of March) at
-1.6C last night.

Meanwhile, in Penzance, well into the warm air, the sun's just broken
through and it's 11C. Looks like it'll be a nice day on the south
coast, probably stay a bit mirky over the moors.

Good grief! Snow away down there!

I had to scrape ice off the car at 7.45 this morning, but the
temperature rose ro 4.5șC according to the car thermometer by
8.30, and after the clouds rolled away at about 11 am we had a
glorious sunny day, though there was a chilly southerly wind.

Martin - looks as though they lost their bottle sometime between 2353Z last
night and 0255Z this morning! TAF amended 21mins before the snow arrived
METAR EGLL 220720Z 29005KT 5000 -SN BKN034 01/M01 Q1018 TEMPO

I was surprised as the absence of snow on the text forecast - and even the
AirMet - which usually catches the things that the TAFs misses - no mention
of snow.

.... strange that, because the public (tv/radio) forecasts yesterday did
mention the risk of snow, if only of the 'slushy-soongone' variety.

Had the pleasure of watching the 0830 BBC presenter saying there would
be sleet, not settling, turning to rain in the NW of the London SE
region. Even as she spoke snow was settling in this bit of SW Surrey.

As my old boss used to say in quite another context, forecasts are all
very well, but people do need to look out of the window.

.... events like this morning always cheer me up - a timely reminder that
for all the 'whizz-bang' technology, flashy screens, sooper-dooper
micro-scale 'in your face' modelling, we don't yet have the total
answer! As you write, a decent window (or conservatory roof) is a
valuable aid to forecasting.

Martin.

Even sleet this morning in Central London (City) as I walked in. It
was interesting looking right up towards the top of the Natwest tower
- it picked out only the snowflakes and gave the impression of only
snow. Maybe it was all snow up there...!
