Hi all,
Wonder if anyone with long memories could look at these; a couple of nostalgic photos from the winter of 1968-69, when I was a small boy growing up in Hathersage in the Peak District. This one is taken of my mum and sister, and more interestingly, some special Schmidt equipment they brought in to clear the deep drifting in the roads. My dad tells me one chap's car was completely buried and invisible at the side of the road, and the snow was so deep that people walked over it for a week. When the snow melted he had dents all over it ![]() http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e4...969_deep_s.jpg This one is of my Dad's Morris on the road near Stanedge Edge. I'm amazed he could have driven it up there given the snow depth. He said he had winter tires and a lot of determination ![]() http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e4...9_morris_s.jpg No doubt that events like that stick in the memory and shape your view of winter. They were exceptional though, even given the warming trend. Can anyone tell me what dates the pictures might have been taken, and what the synoptic situation was that led to the snow? - Michael (Sheffield 200m asl) |
