Today I drove from the south coast of Wales (Porthcawl) where there was
still some snow a few centimetres deep in shaded place - along the M4 westwards to Swansea. Plenty of snow cover a good few centimetres deep, except on south facing hills. Then northwards via the Neath valley to the heads of the valley. By the time we reached Merthyr Tydfil snow cover was more or less 100% and the car temp sensor was just 2C. I followed the heads of the valleys road to the highest point approaching Brynmawr and the temperature had fallen to 1C. Brynmawr itself was amazing! Level snow of some seven inches in places, most roads with several inches of firm icy cover, and drifts to a foot or so along walls. A real Winter wonderland. I have seen this localised effect before in Brynmawr, but more usually on an easterly wind. Even coming south to Abertillery there was still a good three inches of snow on pavements and untreated roads. North Wales looks to have received a fair dumping - but have we not got uk.sci.weather folk from there? Cheers James -- James Brown |
