Default Today's model interpretation (5/01/06)

Here is a summary of the latest NWP output for noon on Monday. Issued 0552,
5 Jan 06.

The models show a wet and windy period for the UK with temperatures at or
above average in the main.

ECMWF: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Recm1201.gif
SW'lies cover the UK, strongest over the north and west, due to a deep low
over Iceland. A trough associated with a secondary low close to Scotland
affects the UK at T+144, with strong westerlies and WSW'lies as a result. By
T+168 winds become lighter westerlies for all with a new trough approaching
from the west.

MetO: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rukm1201.gif
A trough covers the UK with stroing WSW'lies for most. The winds become
westerlies at T+144 as the trough moves away to the east.

GFS: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rtavn1201.png
The UK lies under a mixture of SW'lies and WSW'lies, with a trough to the
west. The trough moves swiftly eastwards at T+144, bringing westerlies for
all. The winds become SW'lies again at T+168 as another trough approaches
from the west.

The Canadian model also shows a deep low near Iceland and a trough west of
the UK. Winds are SW'lies for all.

GME/DWD:

DWD also brings SW'lies across the UK with a trough to the west. The trough
moves swiftly across the UK and by T+144 a weak ridge brings NW'lies and
westerlies to the UK.

JMA: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rjma1201.gif
The Japanese run shows southerlies for England and Wales, under the
influence of a large high to the east. Elsewhere winds are strong SW'lies
and by T+144 SW'lies sweep across the whole of the UK ahead of a trough to
the west.

NOGAPS: http://217.160.75.104/pics/ngp10.prp.120.europeg.gif
The UK lies SW'lies, again with a trough to the west. The trough lies over
eastern England at T+144 with near gale force SW'lies ahead of it and strong
westerlies following behind.

KMA: http://www.kma.go.kr/kma03/gif/g21nh_smsr_120.gif
As with the other runs, the Korean model shows SW'lies, this time with a
trough to the east.
