uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged.

Default Did anybody watch news about global warming?

Scientists are saying, that new research is contradicting
global warming and saying that if the ice caps further
break off and or melt then the uk is at risk of getting
much colder!

Myself ive been saying this for years sigh..

So going by the anti global warming method
i should be expecting ice caps in the north sea
by say 2020?

I need some ice for my drinks probably cheaper :d

They is no gulf between the opposing camps because they are the same camp!
Global Warming refers to the overall warming of the the Globe. The UK is
not the whole Globe. The "new research" does not contradict Global Warming
as Nigel himself admits when he says "if the ice caps further break off or
melt then the UK is at risk of getting much colder." This theory requires
Global Warming to occur for the UK to cool down.

This "new research" is not a new theory but new measurements showing that
the part of the Gulf Stream transporting water Eastwards to Africa has
strengthened whilst the NAD, which moves warm water NE past the UK, has
weakened. This is what would be expected during a switch of the current
system in the North Atlantic. More than forty years ago, scientists were
aware that sudden changes in these currents had occurred in the past.

In the new circulation, the NAD would cease to exist. The Gulf Stream would
be a closed anticyclonic circulation with its warm water probably extending
no further north than 45N. To the north of this, there would be a cyclonic
circulation of cold water fed by the East Greenland and Labrador currents.
These cold currents would flow east across the Atlantic towards the UK then
NE, taking the place of the NAD.

Would that fuel more and more powerful hurricanes?

Hadn't thought about that but it seems probable. I suppose one way of
looking at it could be that if one route for carrying heat from the Tropics
is closed down (NAD), then would hurricanes have to carry more of the
burden?

The effect could have started already.

Sorry JCW didn't quite get your er erm ...drift.
Now all this talk about the Gulf Stream weakening - has Tiger Woods
developed a prostate problem?
