Default Did i see right?

Saw a fleeting glimpse of a newspaper this morning, and I am sure the main
headline was Big Winter Freeze and gas supplies will run out?

Who are the culprits this time?

I was working at an old couples place the other day and what with being
warned of this severe winter, fuel shortages, food shortages and bird flu
they had really been sucked in and were extremely worried about the whole
thing.

It really p***** me of!

Sorry for the rant

The media, who else?

Perhaps they're trying for for two bites of the cherry. Create panic by
lying about the Met Office forecast then, after the winter, if it is merely
colder than average (as forecast) and not the worst since 62-3, they'll
slag them off for getting the forecast wrong. Then again, perhaps I'm
crediting them with too much intelligence. Crediting them with any
intelligence is probably too much.

The paper was a bit behind the times. This appeared on the BBC over a week
ago

Met Office warns of bitter winter
Forecasters predict temperatures are due to plummet
Forecasters are predicting that Britain could be facing one of the coldest
winters in a decade.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4355946.stm

and this appeared on the BBC last Monday;

UK faces fuel shortage - minister
Forecasters predict temperatures are due to plummet
British industry could suffer fuel shortages if Met Office predictions of a
severely cold winter are correct, the government has said.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4372846.stm

Enjoy,

Cheers, Alastair.

Read the MO press release, and then decide who's responible for this.
Everything I've read in the press has been a fair reflection of both
what the MO said in its original statement, and the govt. response.

Yes, please, let's apply a little intelligence to this.

Not what I've read and heard said hasn't. They have only said there is a two
out of three chance of the winter being colder than 1995/96 which isn't
exactly scary is it?

A fair reflection? I've come across little in the media that bears the
slightest resemblance to the press release. Do you really think that "the
forecast is for the harshest winter in decades", "predicted Arctic winter",
"prolonged sub-zero temperatures", "much harsher-than-average winter" are
the same as "colder than average" or "the balance of probability is for a
winter colder than those experienced since 1995/6"?

Quite. You might expect some sensationalisation in the tabloids
but I've seen hype bordering on hysterial in newspapaers that
really should know better.
