According to BBC Coventry & Warwickshire, the PA are reporting that
Thursday will be the warmest 27th October in the UK since 1888. As I haven't got all of my daily records here at home with me, I can only agree with this for Coventry back to 1978. Our local average for this day is 12.5C, so even 19C up here WOULD be exceptional. Does anyone have access to records that may be able to support or deny this claim? I may even be able to quote you on radio! Of course the local media are putting a GW slant on this! Any comments appreciated |

BBC WM have just been on the phone asking me to refer them to a weather
expert in Birmingham - I suggested Simon Keeling and John Kings (Bham uni); can anyone think of anyone else? They also want to follow up the PA press release. Is this a job for COL, to come up with a directory of reliable peolple in the regions willing and able to talk to the press from a considered viewpoint? Or should we divert all queries to Philip? |

From the TORRO website:
October - highest temp for each date. 27 20.3 68.5 Old Street (London) 1888; 20.2/68.4 Norwood (London) 1888 28 20.6 69 Huddersfield (W Yorks) 1958 29 19.2 66.6 Coltishall (Norfolk) 1984 30 21.0 69.8 Llancresse (Guernsey) 2001; 20.2/68.4 Hawarden (Flintshire) 2001; 19.4/67 Reading (Berks) 1927 31 19.4 66.9 Margate (Kent) 1968 So yes, it seems a reasonable claim to make. Because the warmest 27th October since 1968 doesn't sound as impressive.
