Default Heavy drizzle not showing on radar

There's been a few particularly heavy pulses of drizzle here in the last
hour, none of which appear to have been caught on radar.
In the ten minute period just before 10am, 2.6mm was caught in the rain
gauge, equivalent rate of 16mm/hour or so.
I'm surprised the radar isn't showing it up.
Alex.

Having been told at 07:58 on Radio Four this morning that the rain
wouldn't arrive in Scotland until midday, and having difficulty in
hearing this announcement because of the rain hammering the windows,
I'm not surprised at anything.

Supposed to be warm, dry & bright here in Penzance, with 'Risk of scattered
showers this afternoon.'
..
It mirky, very dull, and raining. If it gets much darker the street lights
will come on.

Just checked the rainfall radar, it certainly is showing up now.

Some red/white colours just off Land's End. Showers well into Devon.

Was a lovely day yesterday though.

Hi Alex, it showed upon the Avbrief 5KM radar image for 09:15 GMT as a
bright, isolated, square block of four "pixels" of moderate intensity
in what looks like your exact location. In the 09:30 image, it was
stilll shown but as light precip. over a more diffuse area..

Cheers,

Dave

Hi Dave
I never noticed the echo or overlooked it (I have avbrief subscription
also). I am certain there was a far far greater area of precipitation than 4
pixels worth, even if it was at lower (but still moderate/heavy) rates.
It was raining moderately or heavily most of the morning after 9:30am (aside
from this heavy burst), but the radar wasn't showing anything of it. And
then the local precipitation all appeared on radar at 11.30am or so as if by
magic. Or perhaps someone read the post here and flicked a switch.
I wonder if they have some sort of override in place to ignore potentially
false echoes? And with rain not forecast in this area this morning -
certainly not torrential rain - such an override was in place?
Alex.

Aaaah yes, that indicates to me a radar calibration issue that was
finally noticed when ground observations failed to match the radar
displays. I, too, noticed the sudden "switch" to widesptread echoes
later in the morning.

On the other hand, it was an absolutely fabulous sunny summery day
down here by The Solent. it was literally shirtsleeves weather - I
went on a most pleasant late afternoon bike ride wearing, above the
waist, only a thin T shirt. Wonderful weather for mid October!

Cheers,

Dave

I must say I am envious of the weather experienced down yonder on Monday!
20บC+ here in October is an extremely rare event.
I wouldn't mind a final taste of summer before the much forecast severe
winter sets in (not my forecast I should add!).
Meanwhile, looks like a cool and very wet few days ahead here... Good test
for the radar i suppose!
Alex.
