Default Extra-tropical systems in NHC HURDAT?

Dear All,

Just wondered if any of you knew the extent to which the NHC report
extra-tropical systems that have been "fed" by air of hurricane
origin. Pretty difficult to do, but I was surprised to see the track
of Ike not being extended in the "official" analysis to include the
damaging part of the track over Ohio.

I imagine it's safe to say that without the convective nature of the
storm in allowing stronger gusts to be brought to the surface / the
extra latent heat release that Ike provided in the cold frontal system
over Ohio that it wouldn't have been half the storm it was.

Is it simply ad-hoc or more a political thing (i.e. it's not tropical
any more, I wash my hands of it!). Has this always happened in the
past? Scouring through HURDAT seems to show many more extratropical
cyclones earlier in the record (or maybe I'm just seeing things).

Cheers for any thoughts,
Richard
