Default Strange light in the sky

Apologies if this is the wrong group for this type of query. A friend
observed this strange light in the evening sky (in the UK)and would
like to know what it was - it wasn't the sun which was further over
towards the west. Any information or suggestions as to where to
research further most welcome. Thanks.

Many thanks for your reply and links, Jim. Much appreciated - I'll pass
them on to Kevin. He also took some 35mm film photos which should be
better quality.
