Use of electricity soars; summerlike temperatures expected to moderate

Summer is still months away, but you could have fooled a lot of people
in the region Monday.

Record-breaking heat matched or shoved aside 15 high marks for the day
from Richmond to Salinas on Monday as temperatures soared 20 to 25
degrees above normal for much of Northern California.

Downtown San Francisco hit 91 degrees, Oakland topped out at 88 degrees,
Livermore hit 93 -- all new records, all at least five degrees above the
previous highs. San Jose's 93 dropped the longest-standing record -- 91
degrees set in 1926.

Richmond and Salinas saw the hottest temperatures ever for the month of
April, pegging 94 and 100 degrees, respectively. Oakland, Napa and King
City all tied the record temperature for the month, according to the
National Weather Service.

The heat sent power use soaring, exceeding initial estimates and forcing
power companies and the California Independent System Operator, which
runs the grid, to issue pleas for conservation.
