Heavy Rain Floods White House, Traps Motorists

Three to four inches of rain fell in just about an hour Monday morning
in the nation’s capital.

Heavy rain in Washington, D.C. Monday flooded the White House and
sparked rescues across the area as commuters became trapped in high waters.

Three to four inches of rain fell in about an hour Monday morning, with
water flooding into the basement of the White House. Water pooled on the
floor of the below-ground area of the West Wing where journalists have
workspaces, The Hill reported.

Eamon Javers, a Washington correspondent for CNBC, tweeted a photo of
the flooding shortly before 10 a.m. About thirty minutes later, White
House employees had contained the leak and were drying the area. They
then inspected areas outside the building to find the source of the leak.

In other parts of the Washington–Maryland–Virginia region, flash flood
warnings were in effect. Cars became stranded on flooded parts of the
George Washington Memorial Parkway and drivers climbed on top of their
cars waiting to be rescued nearby on Canal Road.

Dave Dildine, a reporter with WTOP, said he was "totally surprised by
how quickly this occurs."

"[Flash flooding] really happens in a flash, and that's why it's so
dangerous," Dildine said. "When runoff starts going, it happens in a hurry."

D.C. Fire and EMS said it rescued 15 people from their cars in high
water, including six on Canal Road. Several others were rescued on
streets near the White House.
