(CNN)Europe's scorching heat wave expanded across the continent on
Saturday, with people from Britain to the Balkans sweltering under
abnormally high temperatures after a record-breaking week.
France is expecting temperatures of 39 degrees Celsius (103 degrees
Fahrenheit) in parts on Saturday, a day after it shattered its record
mark multiple times in one day.

Spain, which is dealing with the aftermath of a wildfire that tore
through 10,000 acres of forest in the country's north-east on Friday, is
bracing for temperatures of up to 42 degrees, according to its national
meteorological body AEMET. The country is still affected by a "mass of
tropical wind coming from Africa'a mass of tropical wind coming from
Africa," the agency said.

And the UK saw its hottest day of the year by some distance, with the
mercury rising to 33 degrees Celsius (91.4 Fahrenheit) and threatening
the country's hottest-ever June mark of 35.6 degrees, set in 1976.

Temperatures in France cross 45C threshold for first time ever

Temperatures in France crossed the 45 Celsius threshold for the first
time since records began on Friday.

Meteo France said 45.1 Celsius was recorded in Villevieille, in the
south-eastern Gard department at 2.59 pm CEST, beating a one-hour-old
record of 44.3 Celsius in Carpentras, Provence.

The meteorology agency warned that temperatures could rise even further
throughout the afternoon and said: "We need to wait until the end of the
day to know which town will hold the record as France's hottest city."

The previous record was set at 44.1 Celsius during a heatwave in 2003.

France's weather service on Thursday raised the heatwave alert from
orange to red in four southern departments — another first. Hundreds of
schools have been closed and some end-of-year exams have been rescheduled.

It's so hot in Spain that manure self-ignited, sparking a 10,000-acre
wildfire

(CNN)Firefighters in Spain are battling a major wildfire that probably
started after a heap of manure self-ignited amid the intense European
heat wave.

Around 10,000 acres of forest and other vegetation were affected by the
blaze near Tarragona in the country's north-east, according to the
Catalan regional government.

Trees burn during the forest fire west of Tarragona on June 27.
Authorities said the fire likely began when an "improperly managed" pile
of manure self-combusted in the heat, causing sparks.

Spontaneous ignitions can occur when flammable materials, such as piles
of hay, compost or manure heat up to a temperature high enough to cause
combustion, according to the US National Park Service.
