Japan's weather bureau said the amount of rain in the region had broken
all records and was continuing to fall.

Parts of Fukuoka prefecture were hit by *774 millimetres of rain in nine
hours* on Wednesday, more than two times the amount of rain that falls
in a normal July, NHK said.

The massive landslides caused by the flooding left at least tw houses
swept away. Debris is strewn across a wide area hit by floods.

Some 7,500 rescuers, including police, firefighters and soldiers from
Japan's Self Defence Forces, were mobilised to help with evacuations and
search for the missing.

Officials said the military presence could be expanded up to 5,000
people and 50 helicopters if needed.

Default [BBC] Japan floods: Deaths after Kyushu rain rise to 15

Full story: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-40541676

The death toll from flooding caused by recent heavy rain in southern
Japan has risen to at least 15, officials say.

Emergency teams are searching for another 15 people who are missing.

Rivers burst their banks, destroying buildings and roads after more than
50cm (20in) of rain fell on parts of Kyushu, Japan's southernmost
island, over a 12-hour period on Wednesday.

Rescuers are working through thick mud to try to reach stranded
survivors. Hundreds have already been evacuated.

The worst-hit areas are in Fukuoka prefecture.

Announcing the revised death toll, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide
Suga said the region was expected to see further heavy rain on Saturday.

About 12,000 police, military, firefighters and coast guard personnel
have taking part in the rescue operation.
