Got home in the wee small hours this morning after a 24-day trip round
Iceland in a 4WD campervan. What an astounding country it is.
Magnificent scenery round every corner and marvellous bird life. Very
interesting weatherwise. We had some good, some bad and some downright
ugly! The highest temp we had was about 20° but on most days the max
was below 15° and we had a few maxes below 10°. We had several
encounters with really ferocious lee slope winds. At two camp sites we
stayed at these winds wiped out about half of the tents. We saw one
grounded iceberg on the west coast, preumably an export from Greenland.
In a trip full of highlights one that does stand out is the sight of 5
separate glacier tongues from the seafront at Hofn on the south coast.
Each of these reached almost to sea level. We were very happy with the
4WD van. To really experience everything the Iceland has to offer 4WD
is essential.
A memorable trip and, given the opportunity, we'd happily be off
tomorrow to do it all again.
Definitely not looking forward to the heat back in the UK over the next
week or more. It already feels much too hot this morning and it's only
17° at the moment.
