Looks to me like the mean speed was 40mph at that time - but windy

Well I was just going by what the AWS reported. Looking at the graph the average seems to be in the 45 to 50mph thoughout the 06:30 - 0700 period as well to me.

John Chappell's site is interesting one to watch, as it's close to Gwennap Head, generally accepted to be the windiest sub 1,000'site in England.

On 15 December 1979 Gewnnap Head recorded 103 knots, I'll let you conver it into mph.
