Default Conical Hail?

wrote:

Could not help but notice that much of the large hail that fell in the
Peak District today was conical shaped rather than round. Now these
were not soft hail or small hail, these were true 3 - 5mm hail stones
falling from CBs.
So if these were formed in the normal way hail is supposed to be
formed way were these not round.

Thanks.

Simon (South Yorkshire)

The hail we had here was quite large (about 5 mm) but it was soft hail and as
white as snow. Many of the stones crumbled readily when they hit the ground and
it blew around readily in the wind. There's still some lying along the bottom
of the walls this morning. I didn't notice the shape.

It's a very different morning today with persistent slight rain/drizzle,
probably resulting from uplift of moist air.
