`Very Strong' Typhoon, Chaba, Moving Toward Southwestern Japan

Aug. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Typhoon Chaba, located near Japan's
southernmost island chain of Okinawa, is moving toward southwestern
Japan at 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) an hour, the Japan Meteorological
Agency said on its Web site.

The typhoon, the 16th tropical storm of the season, is described as
``big and very strong'' by the agency, which warns of rains, winds and
high tide.

The storm, located 390 kilometers east of the Daito islands of Okinawa
at 3 a.m., is moving north-northwest toward the island of Kyushu.
Strong winds will probably buffet Daito tomorrow afternoon.

Chaba may approach the main southwestern island of Kyushu by Monday
morning, the agency said. Chaba is named after the Thai word for
hibiscus, Kyodo News Service said.
