If it hits NE after only a brush over the outer banks on the way north

potent tropical system in the northeast:

What was the synoptic upper air pattern when Donna took aim on NE?
Similar to now?
The devil is in the details, but most likely there were similarities. Most
landfalling hurricanes in LI/SNE have been steered by southerly winds along
the east side of an upper trof such as we have now. They are most often
preceeded by days of unrelated rains.
