Default Today's model interpretation (11/01/05)

Here is a summary of the latest NWP output for noon on Sunday. Issued 0551,
11 Jan 06.

The models are split today. As with yesterday's 12z output, by T+144 the
MetO shows near gale force winds for the UK from a deep low to the NW,
whereas the GFS has the UK under a large ridge with light winds. Although
the models are broadly similar at T+96, they then differ with respect to
trough disruption to the west.
The GFS develops a cut-off low to the SW, while MetO and ECM instead show
the Azores High ridging eastwards and a much deeper upper trough instead. At
the moment the majority of models seem to back the ECM/MetO setup, an
unsettled outlook with rain for most at times, but the DWD backs up the GFS
in bringing a settled interlude instead. As ever, more runs are needed.

A trough covers Ireland, leading to strong SSW'lies over much of the UK. The
T+144 chart is unavailable via WZ, but by T+168 the UK lies under westerlies
with low pressure well to the north.

MetO also shows a trough, this time over England and Scotland. To the east
winds are SW'lies with westerlies following the trough. A low deepens to the
NW at T+144, bringing strong to gale force westerlies for the UK.

GFS: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rtavn1201.png
GFS shows southerlies over the UK with a weak ridge from the east covering
the UK. Pressure builds over the UK at T+144 with light winds for most,
followed by a mixture of SE'lies and westerlies at T+144 as the ridge moves
SE'wards.

Unavailable today.

The German run shows a secondary low over the Celtic Sea, leasing to NW'lies
for Northern Ireland and NW Scotland. Elsewhere, ahead of a trough, winds
are SW'lies. A ridge topples over the UK at T+144, bringing westerlies to
Northern Ireland and Scotland; elsewhere winds are light and either
westerlies or NE'lies.

JMA: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rjma1201.gif
The Japanese run shows strong southerlies for all with complex low pressure
to the WNW. SW'lies affect the UK at T+144 as a trough moves eastwards over
Ireland.

The American Navy run also shows southerlies, this time with a high to the
NW.

KMA: http://www.kma.go.kr/kma03/gif/g21nh_smsr_120.gif
Southerlies cover the UK as the result of a low to the west.
