Default milder westerlies...

You are right because it's risen to 3C here in Essex with 5C just to the
west. Not sure of the significance in terms in what is happening to the
North.

Yeap,
But it's not just the SW geeting the milder air - look at the
current conditions: http://www.xcweather.co.uk/

Looking at the current conditions it looks like people underestimated

the
milder westerlies pushing in ahead of the cold front coming down from

the
north - Shawbury 5C and Staverton 6C whilst only a few miles away

Cosford 1C
and Pershore 3C respectively. Yes there is cold air coming down from

the
north... I hope.

They mentioned up to 6°C for the extreme SW on the Radio 4 forecast just
before 8am this morning.
