Lightning visible, Fareham
 

BBC TV Weather has been suggesting all evening that the rain/thunder
will run North from Dorset and indeed, that the South Coast East of
Bournemouth may well stay dry for the next 24 hours. The
cloud/rainfall graphics certainly showed that.

However... the cluster of thundery precip has been shifting ENE along
the South Coast for the last 3 hours... and now, radar shows that
activity has reached the West of the IoW with a shower over the North
of Southampton.

As I write, bright sheet lighning is visible to my SW at intervals of
20 to 30 seconds and distant thunder is now faintly audible.

Temperature 20, light winds from I know not which direction after a
long period of calm this evening.

These storms often seem to jump over the immediate Solent area and
relocate over and to the North of the South Downs - I wonder if I'm
going to catch one at last? :)

00:15 BST - there's been light to moderate rain here for the last 5
minutes. Lightning seems to have got no closer though, still to my SW
and thunder not audible at present.

Will it... or won't it???? ;)

It's certainly turning out to be a fascinating spectacle from a safe
distance
(so far) tonight, that I don't yet have to power down the PC. The wind
seems to be a light NE'ly here in Romsey, perhaps a storm inflow breeze.
Interesting that you mention a rainfall echo north of Soton, for we have yet
to receive any pptn. Is it reaching the ground from this medium-level
storm?

Hi Nigel, yes it's been raining lightly for 20 minutes now - and the
lightning is more to my SSW so it's over the Island now. Thunder is
still distant, though. I've known the Island kick these things off
before today - but usually, lightning storms still manage to skirt
round where I am or hop North of the Downs.

the same recorded at Portland.

Yes, you're both right... spots of rain here from 2335Z (and the 'booming'
goes on). Last rumble was the loudest, now audible from indoors, about
30 seconds after the flash making the nearest part of the storm to the south
about 6 miles off .

30 seconds after the flash making the nearest part of the storm to the south
about 6 miles off .

I've just had a bright flash 6 miles to my (slightly West of) South
(thunder getting louder, 30 seconds delay). After a 15 minute dry
spell it's now intermittent light rain here.

Looks like this one may well skirt by to my South. The last biggish
one (last summer) skirted by from East to West, again over the Island.
Got me own little climate here, have I! :)

Moderate to heavy rain for the last 15 minutes, started a few minutes
after my last post. Lightening becoming less frequent to my far South,
no thunder. 17 deg C. Apart from a few mm of rain, this one is going
to pass me by.
