[OT] emails supposedly from my account (Martin Rowley)
All,
I have been contacted by one of the regular contributors to the ng who has had an email that supposedly has come from one of my addresses (the one I use, albeit 'altered', for FAQ matters), with links to German web sites. I have just performed a full scan on my system and confirm that there are no 'nasties' lurking (at least, not known to the latest update for McAfee), and the Firewall is intact and active. If I send 'cold' emails to people (i.e. I initiate the mail to ask for information etc.), the 'Subject' would be appropriate ... e.g. 'Re your entry in the FAQ' (or something similar). I don't send attachments or links within the email, unless you already know that they will arrive - i.e., I've contacted you beforehand, or you are one of my very small list of people (only 4 on this ng) I regularly send items, e.g. the updated FAQ to Les Crossan. If you get anything that pretends to be from me, and is vaguely in German, delete it! Martin. -- FAQ & Glossary for uk.sci.weather at:- http://homepage.ntlworld.com/booty.weather/uswfaqfr.htm |

Snip Martin. -- FAQ & Glossary for uk.sci.weather at:- http://homepage.ntlworld.com/booty.weather/uswfaqfr.htm Martin It's quite common if you have regularly posted to NGs to have your identity hijacked by spammers. Mine appears quite regularly in all sorts of ways and places - I have tried complaining to my own isp, but they seem incapable or, more likely, impotent on this subject! (They have produced a "virtual, throwaway adress" by which you can possibly keep track of where the source of the problem was initiated.) It is likely that you will start getting "genuine" bounce/rejection messages from recipients who only see the source as you. I have been able to train my isp's spam catcher to catch most of these before they reach me, but worry that I could eventually be put on other isp's blacklists through no fault of my own! I have been getting malicious e-mails from someone in my address book.
McAfee and Zone Alarm deal with them usually if I inadvertently open them. I hardly get any real spam as Demon Internet remove it all at source, thanks Demon. If any gets through, and if I don't know the person and/or the subject title looks suspicious with an attachment it gets binned without even looking at it. So anybody e-mailing me, please put in a meaningful subject line or else it won't get read. Martin - you are not in my address book as I know your e-mail address off by heart !
