What of winter 1995-96? The last week of December would have plunged even a mild first three weeks to below average for the month. I believe January was cold that winter, what was February like? Col January 1996 was above average but that February was cold, that's more than I can say about the last 8 February's which have ALL been above the 1961-90 average, at least here in North Staffordshire. My Comment: I like this one. I wondered when we last had something like this. As you can see its ages ago. Interesting. If you assumed that there was no correlation between successive months (and in practice there will be some), you'd expect all three months of a season to be below the monthly average approximately one year in eight (i.e. two cubed), so this does seem to indicate some warming. (The 1 in 8 also assumes that 50% of months will be above the mean and 50% below, which won't necessarily be true, since the arithmetic mean and the median need not coincide.) -- John Hall You can divide people into two categories: those who divide people into two categories and those who don't |
